Job Description

The Studying Processes in Everyday Life (SPIEL) Lab, directed by Dr. Ryan Carpenter in the Psychology Department at the University of Notre Dame, is seeking a highly motivated and organized Lab Coordinator to join our team. This full-time position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on substance use and mobile health interventions.

About the SPIEL Lab
The SPIEL lab uses intensive longitudinal methods, such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA), to understand everyday substance use patterns, identify factors that contribute to the development of substance use problems, and explore the feasibility of mobile health (mHealth) interventions. Currently, we are launching a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)-funded clinical trial to test a tailored psychosocial intervention for individuals in treatment for opioid use disorder to reduce alcohol use.

Position Overview
As the Lab Coordinator, you will play a key role in supporting the research team by coordinating participant recruitment and retention, managing data collection and administration, and overseeing undergraduate research assistants. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with institutional policies and contributing to various aspects of the research process, from data analysis to participant interaction. You will also have opportunities to engage in independent research projects based on your interest.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participant Recruitment and Retention:
    • Oversee recruitment, screening, and enrollment of study participants.
    • Design and post recruitment materials in community settings and online platforms.
    • Monitor participant adherence and retention in research studies.
    • Ensure the collection and maintenance of participant records and databases.
  • Data Collection and Study Execution:
    • Assist with the preparation and submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols.
    • Conduct study visits and train participants to complete daily life data collection (e.g., ecological momentary assessments using smartphones, portable breathalyzers).
    • Oversee randomization of participants in clinical trials.
    • Enter, review, and analyze data, maintaining accurate project files.
  • Supervision and Training of Undergraduate Research Assistants:
    • Develop materials and tools for data collection and train undergraduate research assistants.
    • Manage undergraduate researchers by interviewing, hiring, training, and scheduling team members.
  • Administrative Support and Lab Coordination:
    • Assist with administrative tasks including coordinating lab workflow and ensuring compliance with university and IRB regulations.
    • Upload project data to the NIAAA Data Archive and assist with maintaining participant records.
    • Support website and social media development and maintenance.
    • Plan lab events, meetings, and assist with equipment purchases.
Please note: This is a two-year, limited-term position. Contingent on funding, the position may be extended.

Minimum Qualifications

Required
  • Strong communication skills (e.g., comfortable making phone calls, reaching out to potential recruitment sites, talking to research participants)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, managerial, and supervisory skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Flexible with time to facilitate recruitment and maximize retaining of study participants
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effort to meet project goals
  • Openness to and interest in learning new skills
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive community

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Clinical Science, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred
  • Previous experience in research coordination or related administrative roles is preferred Experience with data collection, recruitment, and working with IRB processes is a plus
  • Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Photoshop)
  • Experience working on a clinical trial and/or in a clinical setting
  • Experience in programming online surveys (e.g., Qualtrics software)
  • Strong statistical and/or data management background / knowledge
  • Experience recruiting participants and conducting research projects
  • Excellent written communication skills
