Assistant Director of Student Recruitment

Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Recruitment in the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering’s Marketing and Communications Office, the Assistant Director of Student Recruitment will support the recruitment management for the school’s ten academic departments’ full-time graduate programs (master’s and PhD), Engineering for Professionals online graduate programs, and the Doctor of Engineering (DEng) degree. This position will represent the Whiting School of Engineering graduate programs at events on and off campus and will support recruitment initiatives both domestically and internationally.


The Assistant Director of Student Recruitment will also coordinate with the admissions and enrollment team to achieve strategic recruitment and yield goals, monitor data to ensure the efforts meet responsible ROI thresholds, and create recruitment communication plans.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute in-person and virtual recruitment events for prospective students and collaborate with the admissions and enrollment staff to support yield/enrollment initiatives, including hosting and participation in Meet the Recruiter, Discover Series, Admitted Student Zoom sessions, among others.
  • Travel, primarily domestically, on behalf of the Whiting School to recruit students for all graduate programs and college-related recruitment events, industry conferences, and more (approximately 20 events per year).
  • Partner with the Associate Director to develop and maintain a recruitment strategy specifically designed for the online engineering master’s, graduate certificates, and doctorate programs, to include tactics that address the unique aspects of the individual degree programs offered, such as time to completion, course offerings, faculty, Capstone projects, research opportunities, and more.
  • Research and understand current programmatic and recruiting trends among leading engineering graduate programs and incorporate these findings into recruitment strategies.
  • In collaboration with members across the recruitment team, create marketing communications and outreach plans to create a pipeline from corporate partners, colleges and universities, and alumni.
  • Serve as a key partner with the Director and Associate Director to liaise with program chairs to understand recruitment goals, program outcomes, course developments, etc. to build measurable tactics and adequately recruit prospective students.
  • Work with the Recruitment and Marketing Coordinator to source, identify, and plan logistics for attending recruiting fairs and other recruiting events.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Coordinator to update and maintain the recruitment website with upcoming events and other highlights for applications and admissions.
  • Promote and increase the awareness of the Whiting School’s graduate programs by working with institutional partners, external academic partners, other Johns Hopkins University schools, and professional engineering organizations such as IEEE, ASEE.
  • Serve as a key contributor to providing high quality customer service to meet the recruitment and enrollment needs of the Whiting School.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Active and current knowledge of applicant life-cycle data strategies and marketing recruitment best practices for admissions recruitment, especially engineering.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, confident presentation ability, adapt to manage multiple tasks, and organizational and creative fluency.
  • Must be able to function collaboratively and effectively in a team environment, while also managing staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in an ever-changing environment.
  • Requires working knowledge of Zoom, MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Some working knowledge of Word Press.
  • Experience working in recruitment or communications office of an educational institution, nonprofit, or private firm.
  • Willingness to help formulate new recruitment strategies.
  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of current recruitment efforts against targets and benchmarks and recommend alternatives as needed. This position requires working outside normal business hours, as well as travel.
  • This position will attend academic/industry conferences and events (at least 20 events annually), conduct onsite information sessions for potential students as needed, and other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, or Public Relations.
  • Three years of related experience in enrollment services, recruitment, admissions, or related field.
  • Working knowledge of SLATE or other marketing automation systems is highly desirable.
