Santa Fe College’s Natural Sciences within the Academic Affairs division of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides pre-professional instruction to guide the development of the next generation of engineers, physicians, and scientists. The Natural Sciences Department also provides non-sciences majors with general education science courses to enable them to understand and appreciate the role of the sciences in daily life and the world community.

Natural Sciences at Santa Fe College is seeking one (1) full-time, continuing contract, 12-month Assistant Professors to promote and encourage student success through quality science instruction focusing on introductory physics. Under general supervision, the Assistant Professor, Physics, will develop, prepare and teach a variety of scientific concepts consisting of teaching assignments which may include introductory physics for liberal arts and calculus and non-calculus based general physics, along with quantitative analysis and all associated labs. Faculty may be assigned to SF’s main Northwest campus or housed at any of the College’s six educational centers. Course offerings within the Natural Sciences Department may be taught during the day, evening, or online, as well as taught using other distance learning formats. Santa Fe College full-time Natural Sciences faculty for physics will have a primary twelve (12) month contract based on teaching 15 credit hours in the fall, 15 credit hours in the spring, and 12 credit hours in the summer; other teaching opportunities over and above contractual obligations and during summer semesters may be available for additional compensation based upon departmental need.

The starting salary for this position is $60,450. Any salary amount above this is commensurate upon an individual’s qualifications.

Job Description

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Plans, organizes, and delivers instruction to didactic, laboratory and/or classroom settings to promote student success within a community college setting.

  • Supports and promotes the college and departmental missions centered on excellence in teaching and learning through quality instruction, curriculum enhancement, and timely service.

  • Collaborates with the Chair, faculty, and peers to evaluate, revise, and develop curriculum that cultivates the mastery of course content.

  • Demonstrates technological literacy and innovation in the delivery of instruction.

  • Works collaboratively as part of a cohesive academic team.

  • Assists with the implementation of college policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with the SF philosophy, mission, strategic initiatives, and procedures.

  • Participates in departmental meetings and collegewide committees as needed.

  • Provides students with frequent, timely assessment and clear feedback regarding academic performance.

  • Appropriately documents student progress and maintains records including attendance, grading, and student learning outcomes.

  • Develops methods that fairly and accurately assess students’ progress in achieving the stated learning outcomes/objectives.

  • Maintains appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment.

  • Strictly honors the privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.

  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Reports to: Chair, Natural Sciences

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: A master's degree or a master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Physics, Mathematical Physics, Biomechanics, Engineering, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Medical Physics, or another recognized academic major in engineering or physics.

Additional Requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted. Must possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills accompanied by proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications. 

Preferred: Teaching experience in a community college and/or university setting and familiarity with classroom technologies and productivity tools.

  • Multi-task - Ability to expeditiously organize, coordinate, manage, prioritize, and perform multiple tasks simultaneously to swiftly assess a situation, determine a logical course of action, and apply the appropriate response.
