JOB SUMMARY

DePauw University is a nationally recognized liberal arts university set on a beautiful campus of 695 acres in west-central Indiana. This 4-1-4 institution including one of the nation’s oldest schools of music is dedicated to academically challenging and socially engaging students from across the country and around the globe. The Coordinator of Community-based Learning in the Hartman House contributes to the development and implementation of purposeful service learning opportunities in support of the mission and goals of the University. The Coordinator Community-based Learning helps in providing advising, and delivering program components of the Bonner Scholars program.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

Student Programming

  • Recruit, supervise, advise, and develop student leaders who manage the volunteer recruitment, training, and placement of the DePauw Service program.[1]
  • Recruit, advise, and develop first year students in the Jane and David Stone Civic Leadership Program.
  • Develop and lead trainings and workshops on community based work and critical service-learning for student leaders across campus.

 

Community Engagement

  • Foster and maintain effective communication and relationships with community agencies and chair annual Community Partner Luncheon planning.
  • Assist the Bonner Coordinator in the maintenance of relationships with community partners, especially in regards to entry level volunteerism and one-time service projects.
  • Create content and support management of on-line communications including website and social media.
  • Support outreach to and partner with faculty members to develop and implement community-based research or projects. With Director of Hartman Center, create and implement a plan for letting faculty know how community based research can enhance their pedagogical goals.
  • Provide logistical assistance for community based education and research.

Requirements

 

 

 

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Master's degree preferred.

Experience: One year of recent work-related experience with community-based learning and civic engagement in a college environment required.

Communication/Language: Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 


Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Computer Skills: Experience with databases and spreadsheets; proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher or equivalents.

Certificates, Licenses & Registrations: Valid US Driver's License and ability to obtain certification to drive University vehicles required.

Other Requirements:

 

  • The ideal candidate will understand and have experience with experiential learning programs like off-campus study, internships, career shadowing, service learning that help students explore and connect with the professions.

 


  • Demonstrated leadership in collaborative settings.

  • Familiarity with the liberal arts college.

  • Experience developing and writing reports and grants.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of constituents, including faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with college-age students, preferably in a residential, liberal arts college environment is necessary.

  • Experience with DePauw University and/or Greencastle, IN communities is preferred.

  • Experience with the Bonner Scholars program is preferred.

  • Respect for student leadership and ability to develop and work with students as leaders.

  • Ability to design, implement and assess training and programming curricula.

  • Experience with nonprofit management, volunteer supervision or program administration.

  • Availability for frequent evening and weekend work.
