Cohen Chair for Holocaust & Genocide Studies

Job Description

Operating Title

Cohen Chair for Holocaust & Genocide Studies

Campus Location

Keene

Department

KSC Holocaust & Genocide Studies

Summary of Position

Keene State College invites applications for an endowed Chair at the rank of associate or full professor (with an expedited track to tenure) in the department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies to begin in fall 2025. Keene State College seeks an outstanding teacher/scholar of the Holocaust who will enhance the College’s role as a leader in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Keene State College is proud to be the first undergraduate institution in the country to offer a four-year baccalaureate degree in this field.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of faculty colleagues, and we seek a candidate who can bring new courses and areas of expertise to the department. For more on our academic programs visit https://www.keene.edu/academics/programs/hgs/ and https://www.keene.edu/academics/graduate/mhgs/. Applicants should have an academic focus on the Holocaust that does not duplicate existing department strengths in Holocaust history, material culture, and Germany. Potential fields of expertise include, but are not limited to, memory, psychology, political science, or trauma. Candidates should be able to contribute to the department at all academic levels, including undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Cohen Chair will teach a reduced course load of four courses each academic year – two in their area of expertise and two as a regular instructor of the graduate-level thesis course. Thesis course loads may vary depending on student enrollment and department need. This reduced teaching load supports the college’s commitment to the position in making possible increased time for scholarship, student recruitment, and departmental grant-writing. Other support includes supplemental annual funds for professional research and travel.

In addition to housing the Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies (the academic program), Keene State College also houses the Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. The newly announced Institute is an expansion of the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, which has historically offered public-facing events and programs for constituents on and off campus. This endowed position will have the opportunity to engage with the Institute as it takes root, including the chance to apply for new funded research opportunities, opportunities for enhancing one’s professional network, and more.

KSC students come from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and 38% are first-generation college students. Our college-wide learning outcomes include critical thinking, creative inquiry, intercultural competence, civic engagement, and commitments to well-being and sustainability. We prepare students to be active citizens and lifelong learners and encourage individuals to apply who will support the College’s efforts to help students become responsible global citizens.

At Keene State College we share a commitment to diversity, equity, and multiculturalism as key elements of academic excellence. We seek faculty with a desire to provide support, mentorship, and direction to prepare students to work within diverse communities. The Holocaust and Genocide Studies Department, in collaboration with the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, is committed to helping develop social change agents with the knowledge, skills, and experience to engage future employers, peers, and others in their communities with compassion. Faculty participate in service work within the department and across the College to advance curriculum, integrate co-curricular experiences, and enhance our liberal arts focus as embodied in the current Strategic Plan.
