As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies. Entomology and Plant Pathology houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with 1.9 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences houses 12 Academic departments with 294 faculty, 2,891 undergraduate students and 899 graduate students. The College is home to 18 research stations strategically located across the state that enhances our interactions with our farmers, stakeholders, and industry partners. Essential Job Duties

The lab researches the epidemiology and management of diseases of small-grain cereals, especially wheat and barley. Research is performed in the lab, greenhouse and field to understand fungal diseases of wheat and barley and identify sources of genetic resistance to them in experimental lines and commercial cultivars. The Research Technician supports research on wheat powdery mildew and Fusarium head blight, two of the most important and damaging diseases of small grains. The position will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Maintaining a collection of wheat powdery mildew isolates by transferring the cultures to fresh medium
  • Monitoring temperature and light in growth chambers, change light bulbs, and report problems. A web-based temperature monitoring system is used.
  • Preparing medium and test samples of wheat from the field for percent infected kernels.
  • Assisting with processing samples of wheat and barley from the field to prepare them for mycotoxin testing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Currently, this position is listed as time-limited for 12 moths, with a maximum time-limited status of three (3) years. However, the position has the potential to become permanent if future funding is secured for its continuation.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in a biological laboratory, including handling fungal or bacterial cultures.
  • Experience with data collection and use of spreadsheets.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in handling and processing samples.
  • Experience using equipment such as laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, and microscopes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lab and/or field experience with plant pathology, horticulture or breeding research.
  • Experience with sterile technique in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience driving light equipment (van or pickup truck).

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.

The position will be required to occasionally drive light equipment (work van or pickup truck) independently. A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
