Access Control System Technician

ID Card Services is seeking an Access Control System Technician to perform essential maintenance and system management of the “J-Card” access control system along with the electronic door and security camera hardware throughout the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington DC. This on-site position will be responsible for the installation, repairs, and programming of all access control-related systems, along with related networks and software.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain the functionality of all fields and low-voltage devices programmed to the LenelS2 access control system.

 

  • Monitor the status of over 700 devices which include cameras and door access control in order to provide 24x7 system availability.

 

  • Perform routine troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on the LenelS2, Assa Abloy, and electrified door hardware.

 

  • Coordinate door hardware and lock issues with the campus Facilities team when outside of J-Card scope.

 

  • Utilize the JIRA ticketing system to report issues, request enhancements, and resolve outstanding software issues with Central IT.

 

  • Coordinate with JHU Networking for correct cable management, labeling, and IP addresses and to troubleshoot J-Card network issues.

 

  • Obtain static IP addresses for all controllers and submit them to Central IT for network monitoring.

 

  • Set up access levels and portal groups along with associated time specs and create necessary holiday schedules for events and university closings.

 

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of Transact and LenelS2 equipment by keeping track of all devices for service calls, new installations, and new PO orders.

 

  • Update device location spreadsheets to be used in the J-Card Cost Allocation and perform quarterly audits.

 

  • Open cases with the vendor for broken equipment, ship out, track status, and log back into inventory when complete.

 

  • Serve as technical advisor to management on the evaluation and effectiveness of existing technologies currently being used by the card office.

 

  • Offer suggestions on alternatives that would increase service, reduce costs, and streamline operations.

 

  • Participate in an on-call rotation after a successful training period.

 

Project Management/Installation

  • Meet with customers, gather requirements, and assist in providing system design services.
  • Formulate and define the scope for new installations. Provide estimates promptly. Start and end jobs in the agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Request IP addresses and set up control panels in the IT closets
  • Work with the space owners to define access control needs. Set up doors and permissions on the agreed-upon scheduling.
  • Set up users and assign access in Transact and LennelS2 applications for access assignment and administration.
  • Perform installation closeouts with the budget analyst
  • Document all door information
  • Cultivate effective working relationships with academic departments, Public Safety, Facilities, Design & Construction, consultants, contractors and IT staff.

 

Daily Administration

  • Set up and or make modifications to schedules and access per customer request.
  • Refresh controllers as needed.
  • Resolve system error messages.
  • Review Denied Transaction Report and follow up on errors.
  • Respond to service requests for maintenance and support.
  • Routine maintenance on door hardware to ensure proper functionality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of college coursework
  • Two years of related experience, including some help desk experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years related experience including card access control systems, wiring, electronic diagnosis and maintenance and lock hardware installation/maintenance.
  • Basic low voltage experience strongly preferred.
