The NC State Marching Band, better known as the Power Sound of the South, is comprised of over 350 students from every area of the university. This high energy group performs at all Wolfpack home football games, select away games, bowl games, and various other events on and off campus. The Power Sound of the South is part of the Department of Performing Arts and Technology that is housed in the Department of Academic and Student Affairs. 

This position will act as the visionary expert for the respective ensemble. Be responsible for all elements of running the Color Guard program both during marching band and the winter indoor season.  Duties/responsibilities are based on the needs and performances of the organization.

Responsibilities could include any and/or all of the following: 
Rehearsal skills, performance skills, (both individual and group), show design, costume and silk design, ability to communicate well with others. Candidate must be able to work in a fast pace environment while producing quality instruction and choreography on tight timelines.

Essential Functions:
  • Assist in show planning and design
  • Teach technique/indoor program
  • Performances in conjunction with the marching band
  • Recruiting (meetings, auditions and clinics);
  • Design and production of performances during the year
  • Budgeting for Supplies, Professional/Technical Services and Capital Equipment
  • Possibly establish a competitive collegiate winter guard program

Calendar: Based on Class Schedule (MWF- 3:40-5:20pm), NC State Football home games, select away games, and other performances throughout the season.

Minimum Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent experience
  • Experience as a performing member and/or teacher of a color guard ensemble (WGI, DCI, college marching band, etc.)
  • Clear understanding of color guard fundamentals and excellent skills in performing dance, equipment (flag, sabre, rifle), show design, and choreography

  • Proven strong leadership in the performing arts with excellent skills in performing dance, equipment (flag, sabre, rifle), show design and choreography.
  • Demonstrated vision to lead and maintain a cutting-edge program with artistic vision and direction.




Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Minimum of four years of teaching experience, coaching, or leading color guard at a competitive and/or college level
  • Vision to lead, maintain, and provide artistic direction for a cutting-edge program
