Job Description

PROJECT MACHINIST, Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC), to join PSFC’s machine shop and fabricate a wide range of components needed to perform research and development in plasma physics and fusion energy. 

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  two-year technical school degree; experience with numerically controlled machine training; ten years of relevant professional experience as a machinist; experience with Master Cam programming CNC lathes and multi-axis milling machines and with the use of horizontal and vertical band saws, belt/disc sanders, rotary grinders, and buffers which are typical in a machine shop; experience working with the materials found in plasma physics and fusion energy, including aluminum, steel, Inconel, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, G10, and or fiber-reinforced plastics; expert level skill with modern machine tools (e.g., the programming of CAM milling machines and lathes) in order to set up, maintain, and operate such machine tools; experience with speeds and feeds and the selection of proper tooling; The ability to work closely with students, researchers, and engineers; R&D background and experience with and ability to fabricate one-off pieces, tooling, and fixtures required for prototype or short-run production cycles; and the ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision, estimate project schedule and costs, and train and educate more junior machinists. PREFERRED:  experience using wire EDM machines.  Job #23879
