Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland, College Park, is now hiring a full-time Educational Programs Student Engagement Specialist to coordinate, develop and implement services and activities to recruit, retain, and assist students in START’s educational programs including the Internship Program, the Global Terrorism Studies Minor program, the Graduate Certificate in Terrorism Analysis, the Graduate Certificate In Insider Risk Management and Mitigation, and the MPS in Security and Terrorism Studies.

To succeed in the position, the successful candidate should be self-directed with a demonstrated ability to organize work effectively and efficiently, paying close attention to detail. This position will require the candidate to: 1) take initiative and work independently, 2) work collaboratively with a small team of education and training staff members, 3) multi-task and prioritize work, 4) maintain student confidentiality as required by the standards set forth by FERPA; 5) communicate professionally via all modes of communication; 6) exercise standards of professionalism including in appearance, presentation and demeanor; and 7) foster positive relationships with departmental faculty and staff, and other institutional representatives.

Responsibilities:

Marketing and Recruitment
  • Conduct marketing activities for educational programs in tandem with the communications team, Extended Studies, campus career centers, and other education team members
  • Recruit new students, including providing updates to program marketing materials
  • Host informational sessions to both students and academic units as applicable
  • Identify and attend both UMD and area educational and career fairs, student events, and showcases to recruit for educational programs (i.e., First Look Fair, Second Look Fair, etc.)
  • Market educational program, through liaising with career advisors and professors at University of Maryland and other institutions
  • Support social media engagement (ex: LinkedIn) and manage job placement accounts (ex: Handshake, Indeed) used for recruitment and outreach for educational programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Application and Admissions Support
  • Coordinate the application process for all applicants to each of the programs (applicants for open intern positions (5-20) each of three semesters (spring, summer, fall), 40 students per year GTSM across two application cycles, and approximately 30-40 students per year in grad certs and MPS combined)
  • Communicate and respond to inquiries from potential applicants about updates to application guidelines and submission of applications
  • Track applications and monitor progress towards completion
  • Participate in and organize GTSM selection committee
  • Participate in application review processes for graduate program applications
  • Coordinate and conduct Internship orientation (three times per year)
  • Other duties as assigned

Advising and Student Support
  • Develop and distribute career development newsletters to include topics relevant to career counseling and employment opportunities to existing students and interns
  • Organize networking and other career development opportunities for existing students and interns
  • Assist students in completing and updating course work plans
  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures an campus resources
  • Assist students with identification of long-term goals and career plans
  • Support students in fulfilling requirements for graduation
  • Serve on appropriate college and campus advisory committees
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Experience:
  • At least three years of experience in student relations or related work experience.
  • Experience working in an academic department or admissions office working with both faculty and students.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Prior experience working with both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Prior experience developing educational programming for professionals.
  • Prior experience with University of Maryland systems (SAS, UAchieve, TerpEngage, Advise on the Web, etc.).

Additional Information:

  • The position is a salaried, one-year appointment with the potential for extension. The work week consists of 40 hours per week and the salary range is $60,000 to $68,000 commensurate with education and experience.
  • The person selected for this position will work onsite at START headquarters, will work closely with the Director of Graduate Students, the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and report directly to START’s Program Director for Education and Training.
  • This position is eligible for telework up to two days per week.
