Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University System of Maryland (USM) Office of Academic and Student Affairs is seeking a Graduate Assistant to support the USM’s ABCs for Student Success grant-funded work located within the P–20 division. P–20 refers to work that is devoted to forging stronger connections between PreK–12th grade and higher education, eliminating opportunity gaps along the education continuum. Current USM P–20 efforts include developing collaborative strategies that strengthen P–12 and higher education teaching and learning; educate a civic-minded Maryland citizenry; and improve the recruitment, retention, and continuous professional development of Maryland teachers who promote scientific innovation and entrepreneurship throughout the State of Maryland.

Maryland’s ABCs for Student Success is a multi-year, multimillion dollar project funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program. The project coordinates efforts across 11 USM universities to recruit and train peer mentors to help students from historically underrepresented groups succeed in college. In addition, the project supports holistic advising development at the universities.

The Graduate Assistant position is a 12-month appointment at 20 hours per week, beginning as soon as possible, with the possibility to renew the appointment in subsequent years. The primary location for the position is the USM Office (located at 3300 Metzerott Road in Adelphi, less than a mile from the College Park campus), with opportunities to telework based on a mutually agreeable schedule with the Associate Vice Chancellor. The Graduate Assistant will be provided with a dedicated personal workspace, computer and technology as needed.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Student Success Project Manager, the Graduate Assistant will assist the Project Manager with research activities related to the grant, including creating literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing written and oral reports. The Graduate Assistant will also assist with other tasks related to grant administration, such as scheduling and attending meetings, taking and disseminating notes, and organizing project materials.

In addition, the Graduate Assistant will work with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Education and Outreach, and Senior Director for Education, Outreach, and Pipeline Development to coordinate USM’s teacher education and civic engagement activities, USM-led meetings, and other activities. Tasks may include collaborating with supervisors to research and report on teacher education in Maryland; drafting materials for and presenting at academic conferences; attending meetings and taking and disseminating notes; and assisting with planning and running in-person and virtual workshops focused on civic education and statistics education.
