Space Systems Architect

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you motivated to apply your systems engineering skills to inform the future of our nation’s space control architecture?

Are you an “end-to-end systems thinker" with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience who is looking to have an impact on our National Security Space programs?

Are you passionate about working on complex challenges by applying advanced systems engineering and development principles and applying digital engineering tools and techniques to redefine how complex systems are designed and developed?

If so, we’re looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a Space Systems Architect to perform systems-of-systems engineering of space control architectures using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques & practices. You will be working with a hardworking team of engineers including the government to drive the development of architectures, requirements, and digital engineering products. We provide vital mission engineering, systems engineering, and kill chain expertise to nationally important space capabilities for the Department of Defense. As a member of our systems engineering team, you will collaborate with various teams to complete program-specific end-to-end systems engineering tasking, ensuring the successful delivery of high quality solutions. Our work spans all phases of the systems engineering lifecycle, ensuring the architecture’s driving needs are sustained from beginning to end.

As a Space Systems Architect…

  • Your primary responsibility will be to develop and promote system models for the design and implementation of complex systems and systems-of-systems critical to the warfighter.
  • You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of domain experts to develop engineering models for the purpose of informing decision makers, simplifying design and test, and understanding system performance critical to the warfighter.
  • You will design and document architectures and systems using MBSE methods and tools.
  • You will support or lead efforts on multiple programs and solicit stakeholder needs for MBSE implementation.
  • You will provide MBSE/SysML expertise and related support to the entire systems engineering team.
  • You will design and develop new digital engineering capabilities and processes for APL and our sponsors.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, statistics, or other engineering or related discipline.
  • Have 5+ years of professional experience in systems engineering and MBSE practices and techniques
  • Have systems architecting experience with UML/SysML modeling tools using associated modeling software, such as Cameo, Rhapsody, or SPARX EA.
  • Have identified and applied MBSE methods and tools to support definition and refinement of space architecture artifacts
  • Have strong analytical, verbal, written, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
  • Have participated on teams implementing MBSE techniques and practices on programs and effectively communicate technical results to the team, leadership, and government sponsors
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as needed
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have any of the following…

  • Military experience performing duties related to Planning, C2, Battle Management, Fires, or Intel
  • A Master’s Degree or higher in engineering or related technical field
  • Have worked with modeling frameworks such as the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or Unified Architecture Framework (UAF)
  • Relevant Object Management Group (OMG), INCOSE certification, Graduate Certificate or other systems engineering certifications
  • Experience in a formal technical leadership role, leading a technical team, building modeling and simulation systems and models to assess space based systems, ground systems, operations centers, weapon systems, or constellations
  • Experience with digital engineering methodologies, standards, and the DoD Digital Engineering Strategy
  • Have experience integrating physics-based models with a SysML-based system model
  • Have experience or knowledge of higher level programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Java) and analysis tools (MATLAB)
  • Hold an Active TS or TS/SCI level security clearance
