Job Responsibilities
Position: The Department of Mathematics at Truman State University invites applications for at least one tenure-track position to begin August 2024. The position is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Responsibilities: Provide classroom instruction in a variety of courses for both mathematics majors and non-majors, including courses that support the liberal arts and sciences, non-major support courses, and upper-level mathematics courses; Advise and mentor undergraduate students, including the supervision of student capstone projects and other student research projects; maintain an active scholarship program consistent with Truman’s Teacher-Scholar model; provide service to the department, university, and community.
 

Program: The Department of Mathematics is part of the School of Science and Mathematics at Truman State University. The department has 12 faculty members and approximately 80 students in the undergraduate major, graduating approximately 25 mathematics students yearly. The department also offers minors in Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, supports an Actuarial Science minor, and provides classes to support majors in a variety of disciplines including education, business, and the sciences. The Department also offers courses in the Dialogues (Truman’s liberal studies core curriculum) and opportunities for faculty members to pursue interdisciplinary teaching and research.

The Community: Located in northeast Missouri, Kirksville is a cultural and economic hub in the region. In addition to being the home of Truman, Kirksville is the birthplace of osteopathic medicine and features a medical school, dental school and community college, and the Kirksville School District is consistently recognized for academic excellence. The community takes pride in several annual events including the Red, White and Blue Festival and the FLATS Trail Half-Marathon. The charming downtown area features an arts center, as well as several local shops and restaurants. Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Ph.D. in mathematics or applied mathematics, or a Ph.D. in a related field with at least 18 graduate credits in mathematics. (ABD candidates will be considered with an expected Ph.D. completion prior to the start of the next contract date in August 2025.)
Candidates will be evaluated on: demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching mathematics; evidence of strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to teach a variety of mathematics courses; the ability to conduct research and advise and mentor undergraduate students, including the supervision of capstone projects and other research projects; and the desire and ability to support Truman’s liberal arts and sciences mission. The ability to contribute to the department’s Actuarial Science program is also a plus.
