Description

The Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences shall have the primary responsibility of providing strategic direction, academic leadership, and administrative oversight for the School of Education and Social Sciences. The Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences shall play a pivotal role in advancing the university's mission, fostering excellence in teaching and research, and enhancing community engagement. This position shall report to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Essential Functions

  • Provide visionary leadership to faculty, staff, and students within the School of Education and Social Sciences.
  • Collaborate with department chairs to develop and implement academic programs that align with the university's strategic goals.
  • Lead the development, evaluation, and enhancement of academic programs within the School.
  • Ensure alignment with accreditation standards and emerging trends in education and social sciences.
  • Support the creation of interdisciplinary initiatives that enrich the academic experience.
  • Recruit, retain, and support a diverse and accomplished faculty.
  • Oversee faculty evaluations, promotions, and tenure processes.
  • Lead professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Promote student success through innovative teaching methods and academic support services.
  • Develop and manage the School's budget effectively.
  • Identify external funding opportunities and grants to support research and program initiatives.
  • Allocate resources to support academic and administrative needs.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with local schools, organizations, and agencies.
  • Collaborate on initiatives that address social issues and community development.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulations.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • The ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with relevant industry, government and nonprofit entities in the region and throughout the state of Florida.
  • Experience as an effective administrator in higher education, including strategic planning, curriculum oversight, and the management of fiscal affairs, personnel, and grants, in the role of dean, associate dean, department chair, or the leader of a center and/or institute; a commitment to student success and a passion for academic excellence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes and standards.
  • Strong financial and resource management skills.
  • Visionary thinking and the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective analytical, interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

 Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant field within education or social sciences.
  • A distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and leadership.
  • Proven administrative experience at a senior level within higher education.
