About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

Essential Job Duties

This position serves as a lead electrician of the Central Utilities Plant Maintenance (CUPM) shop team of energy utility technicians. CUPM shop personnel will perform a variety of skilled tasks/functions in support of the five Central Utility Plants across three campuses. Performs a variety of recurring and non-recurring tasks/functions fully at the advanced level related to the electrical trade and some general contributing level work in the electronics trades. Makes project plans including parts identification, cost estimates, parts ordering, and vendor identification and contractor oversight. Duties include troubleshooting mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic and digital control system related to thermal plant equipment (chillers, boilers, pumps, fuel systems, cooling towers, etc.) 

Additional duties include working with inspectors, contractors, and department liaisons as requested, and helping train other employees. These tasks/functions may involve varying processes to test, renovate, overhaul, replace, and perform preventive maintenance on standard electrical systems such as electrical distribution panels, motors, soft starts, frequency drives, UPS and emergency lighting systems. This work involves troubleshooting electrical/electronic problems on plant equipment such as digital/electronic control systems to include both hardware and software. Work is also performed on 4160volt starter breakers for chillers.

Other Responsibilities

Hours are subject to change to meet the needs of the university. This position is subject to emergency call back. Required to wear personal protective equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear plugs.

Additional safety equipment to include respirator, hardhat, and/or other gear related to the work site. Must be able to work during adverse weather and other Energy Systems emergencies even if the University is closed.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment.
  • This includes use of hand tools and diagnostic equipment commonly used in the electrical trade.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
  • The ability to perform tasks associated with the assigned electrical trade on an advanced level.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Knowledge of MS Word and working within a work order management system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in electrical trade working in maintenance within utilities or academic facilities.
  • Prefer NC Electrical Contractor License.
  • Electronics: Two to four years technical work experience programming and troubleshooting commercial and/or industrial HVAC and related controls/software.
  • Experience with Honeywell HC900 PLC hardware and TAC hardware systems a plus.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repair of VFD’s, MCC’s, lighting panels, motors, etc.
  • Understanding of and use of Lock Out Tag Out procedures.
  • Knowledge in the use of Federal and North Carolina safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge in the use of OSHA policies and procedures.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
