Assistant Group Supervisor for the Navigation Group (KBN)-24083 

 

Position Description
 

Are you interested in developing and leading 30+ engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists in their pursuit of innovative solutions to timely and timeless maritime navigation challenges?

 

Are you up to the task involved in addressing some of the most unique navigation concerns in the US Navy?

We are seeking an Assistant Group Supervisor to provide leadership, vision, and strategic guidance to the Navigation Group (KBN) in the Force Projection Sector. KBN ensures the US Navy has the most accurate, yet reliable navigation systems in the world. Our efforts support navigation missions of upmost importance to the United States in an increasingly challenging environment.

 

As the KBN Assistant Group Supervisor:

 

 

 

  • Your role will encompass Strategic Planning, Effective Communications, Staff Development, and Technical Leadership.
  • You will develop, maintain and communicate a forward-looking strategy for the group that aligns with relevant Mission Areas across the organization.
  • You will foster collaboration with complementary groups within FPS and APL. KBN is addressing critical challenges in the Strategic Deterrence Mission Area, Sea Control Mission Area, and Air and Missile Defense Mission Area
  • You will communicate regularly with Government sponsors, industry partners, and key APL program and technical staff to track and forecast technologies and resource needs to meet current and future demands.
  • You will provide technical leadership and ensure that the highest standards of technical excellence are met on every project through both technical participation and technical guidance.
  • You will provide mentorship and coaching for staff as they develop their careers and seek out diverse and innovative talent that strengthens the group’s ability to respond to current and emerging needs.
  • You will ensure effective execution of technical tasks within the Group while managing workload and coverage.
  • You will create and maintain long-range staffing and technology plans and identify technical competencies needed to support programs and achieve mission area and sector strategies.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

 

  • A BS degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field with 6+ years of experience with engineering or analysis of complex systems.
  • At least 3 years of experience in the engineering, modeling, or evaluation of DoD navigation systems.
  • Prior line management experience or project experience with demonstrated excellent technical skills and consistent track record of successfully leading staff in solving complex problems.
  • Outstanding leadership attributes, with the ability to motivate, inspire, mentor and develop staff, and to cultivate strong relationships across organizational boundaries.
  • Proven track record in building a technically strong and diverse workforce and in developing future leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to set direction and implement plans to achieve goals and build capabilities including the pursuit of new initiatives and ability to engage sponsors.
  • Track record of excellent judgment and discretion. Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communications skills, and organizational skills, with a record of accomplishment in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish relationships and effectively interact with all levels of staff, management, and external sponsors.
  • An active Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. 
  • The ability to travel to support meetings with the government, design agents and other contractors at their locations, including travel to operational testing sites.

 

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

 

  • A MS or PhD in engineering, math, physics or equivalent, and more than 10 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Experience collaborating with the U.S. Navy navigation community
  • Experience successfully leading efforts in solving complex inertial navigation problems including tasks involving systems engineering, state-space modeling and estimation, sensor integration, accuracy assessment, test and evaluation, and geophysical aiding for navigation.
  • Prior APL line management experience
  • Familiarity with APL and FPS internal processes such as: capital planning, overhead management, staff development/training, IRAD management and quality.
  • A current Top Secret level security clearance.
