The Research and Exploratory Development Department at APL is seeking a Research Fellow to serve as an advisor to our Mission Area Executive and our Program Managers. In this role the Research Fellow would assist our team in meeting the following goals:
Understanding the most important technical challenges facing the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, the Department of Energy, and other key elements of the U.S. government
Accelerating transformative innovation for APL and our sponsors in a wide range of technical areas, including materials science, physics, biology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and robotics
Identifying strategic research focus areas for new investment and developing research programs focused on revolutionary advances
Facilitating technology transitions from research to operational elements at APL, government sponsors, and industry partners
Critical evaluation of new technologies and their potential applications to major challenge problems being addressed by APL
Building relationships with government sponsors, industry, academia, and other research institutions
Mentoring and guiding APL staff members in their career development and technical growth
Supporting the Department in its vision to build a diverse and inclusive work force based on the most important APL core value, unquestionable integrity
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…
•PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or a related discipline.
•Experience directing research and development efforts in advanced composite materials for aerospace and commercial applications.
•20+ years of relevant professional experience in applied research to include a focus on materials, composites, metals, additive manufacturing and research and development .
•Strategic thinker with ability to interact with all levels of staff and management including senior leadership of government agencies and academic institutions.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Broad research interests.
•Ability to articulate a compelling vision for an emerging new research area and plan for leveraging programmatic resources to achieve that vision.
• Holds an active TS/SCI clearance. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
