Mentor: Dr. Eric Ubil, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, UAB School of Medicine, UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, email:

The Ubil laboratory is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral fellows with a background in immunology. The laboratory focuses on immune suppression in the tumor environment – particularly tumor protein secretions that dampen the anti-tumor activities of macrophages.  Current research explores facets of immune suppression related to the Mer receptor tyrosine kinase expressed on macrophages and the tumor-secreted ligand Pros1 (Ubil et al., JCI 2018).  Potential projects include: dissecting downstream signaling to identify novel therapeutic targets, understanding differential tumor suppressive capabilities and studying macrophage:T cell interactions. The laboratory uses a combination of qRT-PCR, confocal microscopy/live-cell imaging, flow cytometry and murine tumor models, as well as mass spectrometry and RNA-Seq.  Candidates are also encouraged to identify and develop proficiencies in other techniques and to independently explore alternative methods.

Career development is a focus in the laboratory, with postdoctoral fellows expected to seek independent funding, network/collaborate and attend related conferences.

Candidates should submit the following items to Dr. Eric Ubil at

  • Cover letter indicating current and future research interests, scientific accomplishments/publication(s) and expected availability date
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Contact information for three references
