Essential Job Duties

The purpose of this internship is to increase awareness and access to mental health and healthy relationship resources among youth aged 8 to 14 who attend Millstone camp as well as among camp staff and counselors. The intern will work with a faculty member at NCSU department of Agricultural Human Sciences to design a week-long program involving brief group interactions with campers addressing mental health and healthy relationships. Additionally, the professional will also work with youth who are in behavioral distress or require mental health assistance, and with pairs or groups of youth who experience interpersonal conflict with other campers. The professional will also work with camp program director to support and build capacity among staff to recognize and support low intensity mental health needs of campers. The internship will begin on May 15th and involve 4 weeks off-camp program preparation and planning at NCSU (remote/hybrid), 6 weeks on-site at Millstone camp working with staff and campers, and 2 weeks spent reviewing program evaluation data, and preparation and presentation of a brief program report. During active camp weeks when youth are onsite, the intern, along with other camp staff, will be expected to respond after hours to youth as needs arise. 

Those in clinical mental health graduate programs may continue to work with their clinical supervisors to receive supervision for individual and relational client hours through this internship. The team is happy to support and collaborate with the intern’s training program to ensure they receive credit where possible.  The opportunity to return to this program for a second summer is available. This internship comes with a $5000 stipend, $900 travel stipend, and room and board for the duration of your stay at Millstone Camp. 

About the internship sites: Millstone 4H-camp offers youth a 6-day residential camp experience where children have the opportunity to engage in a variety of fun and educational activities including Canoeing and Kayaking, Crafts, Swimming, Hiking, Field Games, Ropes Courses, Shooting Sports (archery, riflery, and shotguns) combined with delicious meals and fun, caring, and highly qualified staff.
The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary department that addresses critical research questions related to nurturing strong, healthy, productive families and communities to find solutions to problems and extend knowledge to create healthy communities for youth and families.

Minimum Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in Masters or Doctoral Degree Program in a Clinical Mental Health Program

Department Required Skills

  • Possess basic clinical counseling/therapy skills to administer mental health first aid, conflict resolution, addressing relationship health, dating, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation 
  • Foundational knowledge of brief mental health education and relationship education programs 

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Ability to gather and consolidate research to support program planning for adolescent mental and relationship health

Required License or Certification

  • Eligible for licensure or working toward accruing clinical hours for eligibility for licensure
