The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Remote Sensing Scientist.
Develop theoretical concepts of remote sensing systems to develop into operational capabilities for our sponsors. Remote sensing modalities include but are not limited to Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI), Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR), and Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) systems. Coordinate efforts with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to develop all facets of novel optical systems including hardware, software, image processing/machine learning, and field testing.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
1. Innovate and promote new advanced remote sensing methodologies. (50%)
2. Support existing tasks and improve existing methodologies to provide enhanced remote sensing performance. (25%)
3. Present research and findings to sponsors, academia, and industry via briefings, conference proceedings, and journal articles. (15%)
4. Support field integration and testing activities, data analysis, and lab experimentation, as required. (10%)

PhD in imaging science, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or equivalent and 7 years of related experience. Experience developing optical remote sensing systems and taking them from research/prototypes to operations. Strong optical system design skills, good interpersonal skills, good speaking and technical writing skills. Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
PhD and 10 years relevant experience in industry, consulting or academia. Proficient in system development along the entire image processing chain from hardware to machine learning. Proficient in radiative transfer theory, physics models and statistical signal processing techniques. Experience in leading developmental teams (5+ people) and writing proposals/white papers.
Special Working Conditions: Must be eligible and willing to undergo DoD clearance requiring background investigation and/or polygraph examination. Preference for current SSBI.
Security: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
